LETTER: I don’t want a cigar bar at DTW (Detroit Free Press)

As a lifelong Michigander, I am deeply concerned about the proposal to allow a cigar lounge at Detroit Metro Airport. This decision is not only misguided, but also poses a danger to public health. Michigan already struggles with some of the highest tobacco-related harms in the nation.

Adult smoking rates here are higher some neighboring states. Youth access to tobaccoremains a persistent problem, with many Detroit retailers failing compliance checks. Travelers and airport employees deserve clean, healthy air ― not exposure tosecondhand smoke.

The Wayne County Airport Authority has a choice. It can dig the hole deeper, or it canchart a healthier course. DTW will thrive without a cigar bar. Let’s protect Michigan kids, families, and workers. Let’s keep Detroit Metro Airport smoke-free.
